In-Store signing with Udon Entertainment & DC
- April 28, 2007 -
Happy Harbor Comics was proud to bring creators from Udon Entertainment
to Edmonton for a special in-store signing event. Jim
Zubkavich, Joe
Ng, and Omar
Dogan were on hand to sign comics, chat with the fans and
promote their titles. HH was also pleased to have Platinum Studio's
John Keane,
(artist of the upcoming "Blood Nation" #3-4) attending, and to top things off, we were very proud to have writer
Gail Simone, from DC comics, here for the day as well!

Gail is arguably one of the top comic writers in the industry today,
writing the monthly "Birds of Prey" and "The All-New Atom" for DC,
along with her creator owned project "Welcome To Tranquility" and
a revival of "Gen 13" under the Wildstorm imprints. Of course, that
didn't stop her from also writing 2005's surprise hit "Villains
United" and the follow up "Secret Six" mini series, two issues of
"Teen Titans" and several issues of "Action Comics" in the past
two years.
Gail first came to attention in 1999 through her website "Women
in Refrigerators" (a site that lists female characters that had
been injured, killed or depowered and analyzes those particular
plot devices) and through her column "You'll All Be Sorry" which
appears on the site Comic Book Resources. From there her career
("a bizarre fluke") took off, first penning tales for several different
Simpsons comics (including the syndicated newspaper strip) and then
moving on to Marvel's "Deadpool". When the title was cancelled and
relaunched under a new title, Simone left and moved over to DC where,
beginning at issue #56, she took over the reigns of "Birds of Prey".
With Villains United, Gail is credited for the revamping of the
now hot character "Catman", turning him from a third-rate villain
to a first class powerhouse and leader. Also in 2005, she wrote
the episode Double Date for the Justice League Unlimited cartoon,
featuring the characters Green Arrow, Black Canary, the Huntress
and the Question. The offer to Gail to write the episode was "incredibly
flattering" as she was requested to write a "Gail Simone-script",
a tip of the hat to her ability to showcase strong female lead characters.
