To Be Continued:
Participants will be taken through advanced techniques in graphic storytelling, idea creation and development, and learn more about the business side of comic book creation. By the end of the camp, they will have each created a 1-page comic which will be published in an anthology.

† Participants are encouraged to bring their own supplies if they have materials they would prefer to use and/or would like to augment their work with materials not included in the kit provided.
Participants are expected to bring their own lunches to each day of the Youth Camps (In the Beginning & To Be Continued). A group snack will be provided each day for all participants of the Youth Camps, and is included in the camp fee. There will be a vegetarian option. In order to give Drawn-to-Writers the full experience of publishing a comic, they are strongly encouraged to attend the anthology launch party, where they will sign comics for the crowds that turn up to buy the book.
Comics are a medium with an incredible breadth of unique storytelling techniques – there's way more to a page than just what's drawn on it! In this workshop, participants will learn how to lay out pages to maximize clarity and lead the reader's eye through the story. Topics covered include panel layout, page design, establishing shots, and setting tone and mood.
This workshop will focus on storytelling challenges and techniques unique to the comics medium: the juxtaposition and spatial relations of image and text. Participants will learn how to construct a comic page as a series of ideas interacting with each other to create the desired narrative effect. Practical considerations of the format, like maximizing reader ease through word balloon placement and maintaining a workable balance of information inside individual panels, will also be examined.
The blank page with “page one, panel one” at the top is one of the most daunting sights in comic creation. There are several methods of comic scripting which will be explored in this workshop, with emphasis on finding what works for you and the necessity of clear communication to the artist. Page/panel, direction and dialogue, and visual script formats will be covered, as well as elements unique to a comic script like page turns and visualizing the page to write it. Whether you're an aspiring writer, or an artist looking for more insight into interpreting scripts, this is the class for you!
For many, drawing the comic is the easy part – how do you get it in print and into people's hands? It all starts with file preparation, and understanding what a printer needs from you to produce the best book possible. Topics covered include page formats and their effect on printing and price, finding a printer, putting together a book layout file, and possibly the most important factor – how do you sell your books once they're printed!?
Our fully insured instructors and supervisors are knowledgeable comics creators, curators, and enthusiasts. Each is a devoted member of Happy Harbor's artist community, and includes past participants of Happy Harbor's Artist-in-Residence Program!
